't strike john mccain when he admitted his own party had a problem. there seems to be some truth talking, some movement towards compromise. are you optimistic about this? >> well, first of all, i'm glad senator mccain said what he did because we don't want the republicans to get any credit for having a moral -- they're doing this because they can read election returns, and they've got to fwet this issue at least beyond them. they have to understand there's a price to pay. do they pay the price if they're obstructionist on 100% background check? do they pay the price if they're obstructionist on high capacity magazines in they have to make that decision. on the fiscal cliff themselves, do they pay the price if they don't do something that is commonsense and a workable approach to debt? energy. all these things. we like wee winding tape to 2007 and -- george w. bush is really -- that tape speaks for itself. gornl bush did in 2007 introduce immigration reform that went basically nowhere. he made personal calls to members of his own party to get it passed. only 12 of the 49 republican senato

seated and was watching john mccain in particular, and the lines he applauded for, the lines he did not, you can look at that as portending what is possible on capitol hill. he applauded on a lot of the lines of the deficit and the mention of newtown and other issues, but notably on immigration reform, he just sort of sat there while other members did applaud. whether or not you can read something into that, i am not sure, but it is definitely an opportunity for reaction on the other side. host: to all of these issues we have been addressing the last hour, i want to look at something your colleague wrote in "the washington post." 's a preemptive bid ?t senate. the group includes senator john mccain, pushing immigration reform for simple years, and florida senator marco rubio join this group as well. they are trying to get ahead of the president's speech in nevada tomorrow on his immigration plan which he introduced in 2011. just reading that over for fun. like the president, they want to create a pathway to citizenship, and their proposal includes a registration and probation program allowing illegals to stay and live and work in the united states with a green card as long as they paid back taxes and paid penalties and get in line for citizenship and approval. they also, however, want stronger border security and tracking of legal immigrants and whether or not they overstayed their welcome. they want to strengthen the employment verification system out there for immigrants, and those getting advanced degrees, ph.d. and masters in the math and the sciences. all of this is good politics, take a listen. >> look at the last election. look at the last election. we are losing dramatically the his pappic vote we think should be o

disagree with the underlining facts that have had people reach those conclusions. john mccain four years ago only got 31%. if you look at george bush, he received, i think 40%, even though immigration wasn't really on the agenda. it shows that it is somewhat condescending that hispanics are single voters about immigration just because they are immigration. most hispanics like most americans are focused on what leaders going to do for them and the economy and securing their streets and securing their place in the world. that shows in the exit polls, hispanic voters are not single- issue voters. as a republican party we can probably do better by being more welcoming in our rhetoric at times and there is a lot of policies that recognize that we are, not just a nation of immigrants, but a nation of laws. expediting illegal immigration. i have an interpreter the from afghanistan who tries to get a visa but he fails to get a visa because there is not enough visas. he could come here easily likely but he wants to do the right thing to be a productive citizen. same thing with immigrants that are
